If you use the html5 video element, you probably want to also include webm & ogv videos to help make your video more accessible on browsers. (I won’t get into using the element, but it’s fairly simple.) What I do want to share is an easy way to take our source video (maybe .mp4 or .mov) and convert it to .webm and .ogv. This solution uses the freely available FFMPEG – it’s been around forever, and many of the pay software “utilities” you could buy just use it in the background. Let’s get to it. If installing Wirecast (a great live streaming application by Telestream) and you run across this little error upon starting up for the first time:
Wirecast was unable to start
Unable to find the QuickTime plug-in. Please reinstall Wirecast.
I would not recommend reinstalling Wirecast but simply downloading and installing QuickTime:
- Visit www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ and download
- Run Setup
- I would uncheck the boxes on this dialog:
- And at the end of the install I would also click “No Thanks”:
You should now be able to run Wirecast without the QuickTime error. This applied to Wirecast 5 (5.0.3) and Windows 7 x64.
As a side note, I’ve been experimenting with DaCast streaming provider, so far seems to work well.
